Ariana Grande, a pop star, and Cynthia Erivo, a British actress, are set to star in Universal’s big-screen adaptation of Tony Award-winning musical “Wicked.”
On Thursday, Grande shared the news of her casting with her 274 million Instagram followers, along with a carousel of images expressing her joy at being a part of the project and the caption “Thank goodness.”
The “Thank U, Next” singer can be seen on a video call with director Jon M. Chu (“In the Heights,” “Crazy Rich Asians”) and her co-star Erivo in one of the photos.
Grande also posted a photo of the flowers Erivo sent her, along with a note that read, “‘Pink goes good with green.'” Congratulations Miss A, the part was made for you, I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you.”
Erivo won a Tony, Grammy and daytime Emmy for her performance as Celie in the stage revival of “The Color Purple,” and was recently nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in National Geographic’s “Genius: Aretha.”
With an Instagram carousel, she also confirmed her next gravity-defying role.
Among her posts was bunch of flowers from Grande, with a note that read: “Dear Cynthia, honored doesn’t even begin to cover it. I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz.”
Serving as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked,” tells an alternative version of events in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival.
The musical follows Elphaba, who is misunderstood and later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and is written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. In the film, Grande and Erivo will play Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.
“Wicked,” according to the theatre news website Broadway World, is one of the most commercially successful musicals of all time, grossing $14.8 million on Broadway alone last year.
Chu told fans of the musical to follow him on Twitter “Get ready for a match up like you’ve never seen before!!! In pink and green!!!”
And it appears that the two leads are a popular choice.
